Emery Criticizes VAR Decision in Aston Villa’s Europa League Defeat
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery expressed strong dissatisfaction with the performance of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) following his team’s 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday. Emery believes VAR made a “huge mistake” by not recommending a red card for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson for a challenge on Ollie Watkins.
Emery’s Outcry Over Anderson Tackle
The incident occurred in the 31st minute at the City Ground when Anderson slid into a tackle on Watkins, making contact with the Villa forward’s ankle with his studs. Referee Joao Pinheiro did not issue a card, and VAR Tiago Martins upheld that decision. Emery was visibly frustrated after the match, stating, “The VAR is so bad. It’s a clear red card, I don’t understand why the VAR is not calling the referee since it’s so clear.”
Emery further emphasized the potential severity of the challenge, adding, “He could break his ankle. Wow. VAR, where are you? Please, it’s your responsibility.” He described the referee’s performance as “fantastic,” but sharply contrasted it with his assessment of the VAR officials.
Watkins’ Injury and Potential Impact
Emery stated that Watkins was “close to breaking his ankle” as a result of the tackle. While the extent of Watkins’ injury remains to be fully assessed, the manager’s comments highlight his concern over the dangerous nature of the challenge and the lack of intervention from VAR.
Penalty Gives Forest the Advantage
Despite the controversy surrounding the Anderson tackle, Nottingham Forest secured a 1-0 victory thanks to a penalty converted by Chris Wood. The penalty was awarded after Lucas Digne conceded a handball. Emery acknowledged the penalty decision but maintained his focus on the unpunished tackle.
Looking Ahead to the Second Leg
Emery remains optimistic about Aston Villa’s chances of progressing to the Europa League final, despite the first-leg defeat. He stated, “The match is not finished, it continues next week. We must come back.” The second leg will be played at Villa Park on May 7th.
Emery’s Full Statement
Speaking to TNT Sports, Emery said, “The referee was fantastic, but the VAR was so bad. It’s a clear red card. I watched it just now. I don’t understand why the VAR is not calling the referee because it’s so clear. VAR is responsible.”
