UNC Health Breaks Ground on 48-Acre Medical Campus in West Cary
UNC Health broke ground Tuesday on a new 48-acre medical campus located between Cary and Research Triangle Park, designed to serve a fast-growing region that is projected to add tens of thousands of residents over the next decade. Following a 10 a.m. ceremony, construction officially began on the initial phase, which features a six-story medical office building and a 900-space parking deck.
The facility sits at 3490 Hopson Road Extension, just off N.C. Highway 55 between Green Level Church Road and TW Alexander Drive. UNC Health leadership, including CEO Dr. Cristy Page and UNC Hospitals President Min Lee spoke at the ceremony to mark the start of the multi-phase project.
Phased Construction Timeline Through 2032
The initial medical office building and parking deck are scheduled to open by 2029. The second major phase of the project involves constructing a 144-bed community hospital on the site by 2032. Once completed, this facility will deliver acute care, emergency services, and surgical capabilities directly to the local community.
According to UNC Health officials, the campus will eventually employ about 1,000 people across its medical office and hospital operations. The expansion addresses a surging demand for healthcare services across west Cary, southern Durham, and the Research Triangle Park corridor.
Population Growth Driving Regional Expansion
Regional planning data indicates that the surrounding area is expected to add 44,000 new residents by 2035. A spokesperson for UNC Health stated that the campus is specifically designed to keep pace with this rapid demographic growth and ensure local access to comprehensive medical care.
