Paris, February 12 (EFE).- UNESCO announced this Thursday that it will receive an exceptional contribution from Japan of 6.9 million euros that will be used to finance projects in emergency situations around the world, and a “significant portion” of them will be used to support Ukraine.
The details of this contribution will be announced at an event on February 17, at the Paris headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, as the organization announced in a statement this Thursday.
“Overall, the Japanese contribution will support more than twenty initiatives in the fields of cultural heritage, education and access to information, and will strengthen UNESCO’s role in a context of growing crises around the world,” the message details.
In addition to the emergency in Ukraine, a country facing its fifth year of war after the large-scale Russian invasion, the initiatives that will be financed with these funds also include water solutions for Yemen or job creation for youth in Sudan.
And in Ukraine, the new funds will particularly go towards monitoring and stabilizing war-damaged heritage sites, creating safe, inclusive and resilient learning environments (through vocational training and mental health support) and strengthening support for journalists.
The Japanese contribution will reinforce the work that UNESCO has been doing to safeguard education, culture and science in emergency situations and which has already resulted, for example, in the protection of forty world heritage sites and 21,000 objects in threatened museums. EFE
