United Airlines announced its largest international network expansion in company history on August 25, 2026, adding 10 new international cities and three new routes across Europe and Asia, according to official company statements. PR Newswire notes that the airline plans to roll out direct services as early as March 2027 to locations such as Ljubljana, Slovenia; Ibiza, Spain; Valencia, Spain; Toulouse, France; Marseille, France; Luxembourg City, Luxembourg; Terceira, Portugal; Olbia (Sardinia), Italy; Catania (Sicily), Italy; and Okinawa, Japan.

New Routes and Fleet Deployment

United Airlines states that this growth highlights the rollout of its brand-new ‘Born to Explore’ A321XLR international fleet, equipped with United Polaris lie-flat seating alongside Economy Plus options providing added elbow room via an open middle seat. The narrowbody aircraft will handle initial deployment to select European cities including Toulouse, Luxembourg City, Marseille, Ibiza, and Valencia. According to reporting by The Air Current, United’s initial A321XLR deployment will be ‘very conservative’ due to range shortfalls. Beyond the 10 new cities, the airline is adding routes from Los Angeles to Osaka, Japan; Washington, D.C. to Milan, Italy; and Denver to Paris, France, while resuming service from San Francisco to Tel Aviv, Israel, according to The Washington Post.

Strategic Growth and Network Leadership

According to The Points Guy, this update builds on nearly a decade of international growth that has added nearly 60 new international destinations to the airline’s route map since 2017. United CEO Scott Kirby stated at an event at Newark Liberty International Airport that the creative and strategic way the carrier expanded its international network since the pandemic made all the difference for customers and employees. Kirby added that the carrier offers the most flights across the Atlantic and Pacific, noting that Newark is the best Atlantic gateway in the country and the most on-time airport in the New York City area so far this year.

Unserved Markets and Regional Reach

According to San Francisco Chronicle and PR Newswire coverage, eight of the 10 newly added cities currently have no other nonstop service from any U.S. airline. United will serve more destinations in Japan, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and France than any other U.S. carrier following the implementation of these routes in 2027. Tickets for the new flights are currently available for purchase on the airline’s official website and mobile app, according to company announcements.
