United Airlines Accelerates Boeing 737 MAX 8 Rollout at Tokyo Narita

United Airlines is accelerating the introduction of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 to its Tokyo Narita (NRT) routes, retiring the 737-800 aircraft earlier than initially planned. The shift, initially slated for early December 2026, will now be completed by August 19, 2026, as part of the airline’s fleet renewal program.

Expanded MAX 8 Service

The airline will deploy the 737 MAX 8 on services to Guam (GUM), Cebu (CEB), Kaohsiung (KHH), Koror (ROR), Saipan (SPN), and Ulaanbaatar (ULN). The first route to see the MAX 8 will be the Tokyo to Ulaanbaatar service, commencing April 30, 2026. Following closely, service to Koror will transition on May 1, 2026.

Guam and Micronesia Operations

United launched Boeing 737 MAX 8 operations in the Guam and Micronesia region on February 6, 2026, with a flight from Guam to Nagoya. The MAX 8 too debuted on the Micronesia Island Hopper route on March 16, 2026. Aeroroutes reports that although the transition is underway, some Guam-based aircraft will continue to be listed with the 737-800 code (738) until late April 2026, fully transitioning to the 737 MAX 8 code (7M8) by December 1, 2026.

United Airlines has maintained operations from Tokyo Narita Airport since the era of Pan Am and its subsequent acquisition of the Pacific division.
