University of Minnesota student-athletes achieved a record cumulative GPA of 3.48 and a 93% graduation rate during the 2025–26 academic year, according to an annual report highlighted by Gopher Athletics leaders at the July meeting of the Board of Regents. The department’s approximately 600 student-athletes across 22 sports maintained their academic standing for the eighth consecutive year, securing 360 Academic All-Big Ten honors and 126 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognitions, alongside 17 programs earning perfect Academic Progress Rate scores.
Competitive Success on the National Stage
According to the University of Minnesota, the Gophers finished 32nd out of 301 schools in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, placing the program in the national top 10% for broad-based athletic success. Student-athletes captured four NCAA individual championships and nine Big Ten individual and relay titles throughout the 2025–26 campaign.
Team achievements included national titles for the Spirit Squad in dance (pom) and small co-ed game day cheer. The women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2005, finishing the season with a 24-9 record and a fourth seed in the NCAA Tournament, according to university records. The volleyball team also reached the Sweet 16, gymnastics placed fourth nationally, and top-20 NCAA finishes were recorded by wrestling, women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s track and field. On the gridiron, Gopher football won the Rate Bowl to extend its Big Ten record to nine straight bowl victories.
International Representation and Economic Impact
Minnesota athletes extended their reach to the international stage during the Winter Olympics. Based on university data, the institution led all Big Ten schools with 16 Olympic competitors, while former and present student-athletes played key roles in securing gold medals for the United States in both men’s and women’s hockey.
On the home front, campus visitors exceed 1.3 million annually while Gopher Athletics drives an economic boost of over $473 million every year throughout Minnesota. University programs also engaged in community service, earning recognition as the Team IMPACT Division I Fellowship Campus of the Year for supporting children facing serious illnesses and disabilities. Football student-athletes surpassed 140,000 donated diapers to the Diaper Bank of Minnesota over the past decade, and the men’s basketball program launched the Ski-U-Mah Strong initiative.
“Our student-athletes continue to demonstrate what it means to excel at the University of Minnesota,” Gopher Athletics Director Mark Coyle said in a public statement. “They are succeeding in the classroom, competing at the highest levels nationally, serving communities across our state and representing Minnesota with pride.”
