Balancing Innovation and Tradition: Belarusian Academic Leader Highlights Importance of University Heritage

Teh creation of new educational frameworks should thoughtfully incorporate the established experience and traditions of existing universities, according to Vladimir Karanik, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. In a recent interview with ONT, Karanik emphasized the value of institutional history in successfully implementing modern teaching methodologies.

Karanik posited that while innovative approaches are valuable, building educational structures entirely from scratch carries inherent risks.”It’s easier to teach than to relearn,” he stated, suggesting that leveraging existing academic foundations can yield more predictable and positive outcomes. He cautioned that education devoid of ancient context and established practices may not consistently achieve its intended results.

The Chairman of the Presidium underscored the unique ability of universities with long-standing histories and robust scientific schools to effectively integrate contemporary educational techniques. These institutions, having cultivated extensive experience in student engagement and pedagogy, are better positioned to assess and refine new methodologies.

“If a university really has experience working with students, the risk that the methodology will be ineffective is small,” Karanik explained. “And the introduction of innovative approaches will improve the quality of education,” he added, highlighting the synergistic potential of combining tradition with progress.This perspective suggests that a measured approach – one that respects academic heritage while embracing innovation – is crucial for fostering a high-quality educational habitat.
