Recent sales data reported by Circana analyst Mat Piscatella on BlueSky reveals a surprising contender in the US console market: the NEX Playground Interactive gaming System. During the week ending November 22nd, it secured the #2 spot in sales, nestled between the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 5.
What is the NEX playground?
The NEX Playground isn’t aiming to compete with customary consoles like the switch or PlayStation 5. Instead, it’s a dedicated gaming system geared towards younger children. It functions as both a camera and a console, operating independently without needing to be connected to another device – a departure from older motion-sensing accessories like the Kinect or PlayStation Camera.
The console itself is a small, colorful cube equipped with a camera lens. Gameplay relies on physical activity, offering a range of interactive experiences. Current game titles include Fruit Ninja, Bluey Bust-a-Move, NHL Puck Rush, and Barbie Dance Party, providing family-friendly entertainment.
While the games aren’t on par with titles for the Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 5, the NEX Playground offers an accessible and engaging experience for younger gamers. it’s currently priced around $250, making it significantly more affordable than its competitors.
