Matt Kuelpman Named Assistant Coach for UNLV Volleyball

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team has added Matt Kuelpman to its coaching staff as an Assistant Coach, the program announced Monday on its website.

Kuelpman’s Background and Experience

Head coach Malia Shoji expressed her enthusiasm for Kuelpman’s addition, highlighting his character, professionalism, and passion for volleyball. Shoji noted that Kuelpman was highly recommended by coaches she respects and brings valuable knowledge and experience aligned with the program’s goals.

Kuelpman joins UNLV from the University of Fresh Mexico, where he served as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator in 2023. During his time with the Lobos, the team averaged 12.26 kills per set, with Uxue Guereca and Kaitlynn Biassou both recording nearly 400 kills each and earning All-MW honors. UNM reached the Mountain West Tournament after defeating UNLV in the first round.

Prior to New Mexico, Kuelpman spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Weber State University, also serving as the recruiting coordinator for the 2023 and 2025 classes according to Weber State Athletics. At Weber State, his responsibilities included coaching back row defense, coordinating the offense, and overseeing blocking, serving, and defensive strategies. He also managed team travel and camps.

Success at Weber State

During his tenure at Weber State, the Wildcats saw improvements in digs per set and kills per set. The program achieved significant success, including winning the Big Sky Championship for the second time in program history. In 2019, Weber State competed in the NIVC tournament, defeating Boise State and Wyoming to reach the quarterfinals.

Weber State had a record-breaking season in 2020, going 15-1 and winning its first Big Sky regular season title. The Wildcats repeated as conference champions in 2021 and established a 25-match home winning streak from 2019 to 2021, the longest in the nation.
