English Literature Students Launch Storytelling Initiative at TK ABA Sumberadi

Four English Literature students from Yogyakarta State University executed an individual student project involving an interactive storytelling session at TK ABA Sumberadi on August 31, 2026. The project team consisted of Muhammad Abdillah Mulki, who served as the project coordinator, alongside Muhamad Youngky Abimanyu, Kurnia Persada Meicel, and Zulfikar Bustomi Shidiq Kuntoro. The program engaged 19 young children at the kindergarten using a targeted narrative approach to introduce early language skills.

Students Use Bilingual Delivery to Tell Story About Dishonesty

The student group utilized a narrative titled “I Lie,” which centers on a character named Ollie who struggles with a habit of dishonesty. To ensure comprehension among the 19 participating children, the presenters delivered the story using a combination of English and Indonesian. Prior to the classroom visit, the organizers reviewed the plot structure and character to adapt their language use to the children’s developmental capabilities.

During the session, three students presented the story together while a fourth student handled documentation. The presenters incorporated dynamic facial expressions, vocal inflection, and physical gestures to maintain audience engagement. The integration of English vocabulary served to introduce a secondary language in a structured, non-monotonous environment, while the Indonesian translation provided contextual support for the narrative’s moral message regarding truthfulness.

Alignment with Educational Development Goals

The storytelling program directly supports Sustainable Development Goal number four, which focuses on Quality Education by fostering interactive and enjoyable learning experiences. The initiative provided the undergraduate students with practical teaching practice while offering the kindergarten students a structured introduction to bilingual learning. Both the organizers and participants reported positive interactions throughout the execution of the project.
