India Women’s Hockey Team Secures Decisive 4-0 Victory Over Uruguay in World Cup Qualifiers
Hyderabad, Telangana – The Indian Women’s Hockey team launched their FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026 campaign with a commanding 4-0 win against Uruguay at the G. M. C. Balayogi Hockey Ground on Sunday, March 8, 2026.
Sunelita Toppo (21′), Ishika (40′), Lalremsiami (49′), and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal (58′) each contributed a goal to secure a dominant start for the hosts in the tournament. This victory places India in a strong position as they pursue qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
Match Highlights
India began the match with aggressive play, creating numerous opportunities in the opening quarter. A penalty corner attempt in the 4th minute saw Udita find the net, but the goal was disallowed as the shot was deemed too high.
The breakthrough came in the 21st minute when Sunelita Toppo capitalized on a rebound from a penalty corner, tapping the ball into the net. India maintained control throughout the second quarter, while Uruguay attempted to respond with counterattacks, but the Indian defense remained resolute.
Ishika extended India’s lead in the 40th minute, finishing a precise pass from Sakshi Rana into the bottom corner. Uruguay had opportunities, including a penalty corner, but failed to reduce the deficit.
Lalremsiami added a third goal in the 49th minute, driving the ball into the circle and unleashing a powerful field goal. Rutuja Dadaso Pisal sealed the victory in the 58th minute, dribbling through the midfield and striking firmly into the net.
Looking Ahead
India will next face Scotland in their second Pool B match on March 9. The top two teams from each group will advance to the next stage of the competition, vying for a place in the 2026 World Cup.
