US Ambassador Demands Apology from Belgian Politician Amidst Diplomatic Row

A diplomatic dispute has erupted between the United States and Belgium after US Ambassador to Belgium Bill White demanded an apology from Conner Rousseau, the chairman of the Belgian political party Vooruit. The demand stems not from recent debates surrounding antisemitism, but from a video posted by Rousseau three weeks ago, on January 27th, comparing the current political climate in the United States to Nazism.

Rousseau’s Controversial Comparison

In the video, Rousseau drew parallels between the actions of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Nazi regime. He stated, “80 years ago, Hitler, the far right and the Nazis turned Europe into hell. A dark chapter in the history of the whole world and Europe. And we all said to ourselves then: never again. Eighty years later, I think we haven’t learned enough of our lesson.”

Rousseau continued, criticizing the actions of the Trump administration and ICE, stating, “What do we see in America today? Trump’s far right, with his private army, ICE, arresting innocent five-year-olds. Who executes nurses who work day and night to care for others and then lie like nothing happened. This is a repeat of history, the consequences of which we have all seen.”

White’s Response and Threat of Sanctions

Ambassador White responded strongly to Rousseau’s video, demanding both an apology and its removal. He further threatened Rousseau with a potential ban from entering the United States, effectively imposing diplomatic sanctions.

Rousseau’s Defiant Response

Rousseau has refused to apologize, criticizing what he perceives as a restriction of freedom of expression. He stated, “It is striking that freedom of expression only seems to matter if one says what the American ambassador wants to hear. I am deeply concerned about ICE’s arrests of young children and execution of innocent mothers and nurses. I will continue to express this concern. The only acceptable excuses are those for accusing our country of anti-Semitism.”

Broader Context: Diplomatic Tensions and Allegations of Lobbying

This dispute occurs amidst other diplomatic tensions. Ambassador White was recently summoned to the Belgian Foreign Ministry regarding his comments on an investigation into Jewish circumcisions in Antwerp, where he spoke of “antisemitism.” Belgian Minister Maxime Prévot deemed these accusations “incorrect, insulting and unacceptable.”

an N-VA deputy has alleged that Ambassador White was lobbying in Washington, potentially influencing the situation.

The situation remains fluid, with potential implications for US-Belgian relations. Ivan De Vadder, a political commentator, noted that Belgium could potentially declare Ambassador White persona non grata, leading to his expulsion from the country and a refusal to recognize him as a diplomat.
