U.S. Army Demonstrates Long-Range Aviation Combat Capability in Korea

The U.S. Army recently showcased its ability to project combat aviation power over extended distances during the Talon Reach exercise, successfully completing a 1,300-mile operation across the Korean Peninsula. The exercise, conducted from March 9-12, 2026, involved a coordinated attack and air assault mission, highlighting the strength of the U.S.-Republic of Korea (ROK) alliance.

Talon Reach Exercise Details

The Talon Reach exercise, involving soldiers from the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade (2CAB), 2nd Infantry Division/ROK-U.S. Combined Division, integrated AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, UH-60 Black Hawk utility helicopters, and CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift aircraft. The operation as well incorporated sustainment elements and small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) to execute long-range operations.

Demonstrating Extended Operational Reach

According to Col. Jason S. Raub, commander of the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, the exercise validated the brigade’s ability to sustain combat aviation operations over extended distances. “Very few units will employ all of their helicopters across more than 1,300 miles while integrating every battalion to support both brigade and division operations,” he stated. He further suggested that if the 2CAB is capable of such an operation, other combat aviation brigades likely possess similar capabilities, serving as a deterrent to potential adversaries.

Logistical Support and Technological Integration

The successful execution of Talon Reach relied heavily on sustained logistical support, including the establishment of seven Forward Arming and Refueling Points (FARPs) across the Korean Peninsula. These FARPs enabled rapid refueling and rearming of aircraft, extending their operational reach. 2nd Lt. Nicholas Meadows, who oversaw one of the sites, explained that these teams can “rapidly establish refueling operations in austere locations, allowing aviation crews to sustain missions across extended distances.”

The exercise also integrated sUAS for reconnaissance and targeting missions, enhancing battlefield awareness. The Apache crews from the 4th Battalion, 2nd Aviation Regiment culminated the exercise with a precision strike against simulated enemy targets following the long-range movement and seizure of an island.

Strengthening the U.S.-ROK Alliance

Talon Reach underscores the commitment of both the United States and the Republic of Korea to maintaining a ready and capable combined force. The exercise builds upon 20 months of progressive training, moving from basic proficiency to complex, multi-domain operations. The ability to conduct long-range aviation operations is particularly relevant in regions requiring forces to operate across dispersed locations while maintaining combat effectiveness.
