U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to strike Iranian power plants and bridges next week if Tehran does not engage in formal negotiations, escalating a military confrontation. The conflict has disrupted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, caused at least two deaths among merchant mariners, and prompted regional military responses, according to reports from the U.S. Central Command (Centcom) and international maritime authorities.
Escalation in the Strait of Hormuz
The U.S. military has intensified its campaign against Iranian infrastructure, citing the need to prevent further attacks on commercial vessels. According to Centcom, recent strikes have targeted Iran. The agency Fars reported that explosions were heard on Qeshm Island.

The maritime sector faces significant instability. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) confirmed that attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz have resulted in at least two deaths and multiple injuries. India had also deplored the death of one of its nationals.
U.S. Policy Shifts and Economic Impact
President Trump announced on Tuesday that he would abandon a previously proposed 20% tax on cargo transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Instead, the administration is pursuing new trade and investment agreements with Gulf monarchies. This pivot follows a surge in global oil prices, as markets reacted to the military activity and the U.S. decision to reimpose a naval blockade on Iranian ports.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury has simultaneously expanded sanctions targeting Iran’s petroleum transport network. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent stated that the new measures target a network linked to oil magnate Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, including approximately 50 individuals and entities, as well as a fleet of tankers. These sanctions are intended to disrupt the financial infrastructure supporting the Iranian regime.
Regional Security Responses
The conflict has triggered widespread military mobilization across the region:
- Kuwait: The military reported that four soldiers were wounded during an Iranian strike that targeted a naval vessel and vital civilian infrastructure. The Kuwaiti armed forces successfully intercepted nearly 40 missiles and drones.
- Bahrain: Authorities in Manama activated air raid sirens on Tuesday following reports of Iranian aerial attacks.
- Israel: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Iran of a "decisive" response to any aggression, noting that Israel’s potential reaction would be more powerful than previous joint operations with the U.S.
Diplomatic Status and Future Negotiations
The Iranian government has accused the United States of "dismantling" the existing protocol of understanding by re-establishing the naval blockade.
Meanwhile, internal political pressure in Israel has increased following the passage of a law suspending the arrest of ultra-orthodox students who refuse military conscription, a move criticized by the opposition amidst current staffing shortages in the army.
