A 20-year-old U.S. Marine stationed in Okinawa has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a 39-year-old Japanese woman in a Naha hotel room and stealing her wallet.

Local police took the suspect into custody after investigators tracked his movements through nearby surveillance footage. The recording showed an unfamiliar man entering a hotel room with a woman and later leaving with her belongings, according to public broadcaster NHK and other Japanese media outlets citing investigative sources.
Officers located a 20-year-old man matching the physical description from the footage. Police asked him to accompany them voluntarily to a local station, where formal arrest procedures followed.
The Suspect and Station Assignment
The suspect was identified by Reuters as Devin Jacob Ballard. He is assigned to the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Japan’s southernmost prefecture.
The suspect denies the allegations against him, according to Reuters. Investigators state the incident occurred on a Saturday inside a hotel in the capital city of Naha, where the victim, Anna Yagi, was found dead.
Diplomatic Outreach and Ambassador Response
U.S. Ambassador to Japan George Glass addressed the incident on social media. Glass stated that he spoke by phone with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Governor of Okinawa to offer condolences and pledge full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

The United States maintains approximately 54,000 military personnel in Japan, with the majority stationed across Okinawa. Past crimes involving U.S. service members—including assaults, rapes, hit-and-run incidents, and driving under the influence—have repeatedly sparked public protests in the prefecture.
