An early-season nor’easter is threatening more than 40 million residents across the northeastern United States with torrential rain, strong gusts, and severe coastal flooding from Friday afternoon through Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
Coastal Impacts and State of Emergency Declarations
Meteorologists warn that the storm will bring dangerous surf, high winds, and coastal erosion spanning from New Jersey to Massachusetts. Forecasters anticipate wind gusts reaching up to 100 km/h along parts of the New England coastline. Meanwhile, eastern Massachusetts, including Boston, faces rainfall totals of up to 13 centimeters, representing more than an average month of precipitation. Coastal areas in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey have already reported flooding since Wednesday.
In response to the mounting threats, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill declared states of emergency for counties projected to bear the brunt of the weather system, including New York City. State officials cautioned that the storm’s heavy downpours and high winds risk widespread power outages, severe property damage, and major road closures that endanger public safety.

The severe weather has forced widespread event cancellations throughout the region. Organizers of Ed Sheeran’s tour canceled his Friday and Saturday performances at the Gillette Stadium near Boston. In New York, the Global Citizen festival scheduled for Saturday in Central Park was called off due to the extreme forecasts, prompting New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to urge residents to plan extra travel time and check on neighbors. Organizers also canceled the Oceans Calling festival in Ocean City, Maryland.
The Federal Aviation Administration warned travelers of potential disruptions to commercial aviation and advised passengers to monitor real-time updates. Major carriers including JetBlue, United, and American Airlines responded by issuing travel waivers that allow passengers to modify upcoming flights without incurring change fees.
