United States Pushes for Poland in G20 at December Summit

The United States wants Poland to join the G20 as a permanent member “as soon as possible,” according to the US State Department. Washington plans to raise the issue with international forum members at the upcoming summit scheduled for December 14–15 at a Florida golf resort, Notes From Poland reported.

Having previously backed Polish membership in May, the State Department confirmed to the Polish Press Agency (PAP) that it intends to continue discussions with current G20 members this year. Washington cited Poland’s steady economic growth and growing international leadership as the primary justifications for a permanent seat.

Washington Proposes Summit Declaration Wording

The G20 brings together 19 major countries alongside the European Union and the African Union, representing roughly 85% of global economic output. The United States holds the group’s rotating presidency for 2026 and has invited Poland to participate as a guest throughout the year.

According to PAP reporting, the US has proposed that the final declaration adopted by leaders at the conclusion of the Miami summit include a specific point endorsing Poland’s permanent membership. However, achieving this status requires a consensus from all existing member states, including Russia.

Poland 24 noted that the American presidency planned to discuss the proposed wording during a pre-summit video conference involving sherpas negotiating the final text. Polish officials acknowledge that securing unanimous agreement from all members remains a significant hurdle.

Warsaw Pursues Multiple Diplomatic Options

Following a visit to Washington earlier this month, Marcin Przydacz, head of President Karol Nawrocki’s international policy office, stated that permanent accession is “Plan A.” To build international support, Nawrocki plans to visit Saudi Arabia and Argentina, both G20 members.

As an alternative approach, Nawrocki intends to travel to London ahead of the summit to discuss extending Poland’s guest status into next year, when the United Kingdom hosts the G20. Finance Minister Andrzej Domański stated at a meeting of G20 trade ministers in Milwaukee that Poland maintains a strong chance of securing a guest invitation for 2027.

A third option involves pursuing “permanent guest” status, a designation currently held by Spain as well as international bodies like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group.

Controversy Over Russian Attendance in Miami

Przydacz confirmed that while President Nawrocki “does not like” the decision to invite Putin, the Polish leader still intends to attend the summit. Sikorski similarly confirmed his participation in a G20 foreign ministers meeting in Atlanta in October despite the potential presence of a Russian representative.

The place of my country is among the members of the G20, late Polish President Lech Kaczyński declared in 2010, marking an early milestone in Warsaw’s long-running diplomatic campaign for a permanent seat at the global economic forum.
