The United States expects NATO defense ministers to make new commitments to purchase weapons for Ukraine at a meeting of NATO defense ministers this week. US Permanent Representative to NATO Matthew Whitaker announced this on Tuesday, February 10, during an online briefing.
According to Whitaker, quoted by Reuters, we are talking about new purchases by Western allies of American weapons for Kyiv as part of the PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) program. – Ord.), which, on the initiative of US President Donald Trump, has been in effect since the summer of 2025 and is coordinated by NATO.
According to Ukrainian authorities, in 2025 the amount of contributions to the PURL program amounted to $4.3 billion, of which almost $1.5 billion in December.
The US Ambassador to NATO also thanked three European countries for their leadership in the program: “I would like to recognize three PURL champions: Germany, the Netherlands and Norway. These countries not only made significant contributions, but also actively encouraged others to follow their example.”
US calls on Europeans to take a more active role in their own defense
The meeting of NATO defense ministers will take place on Thursday, February 12, in Brussels. It is expected that the heads of defense departments of 32 member states of the alliance will attend, as well as the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Mikhail Fedorov.
According to Reuters sources, in addition to purchasing American weapons for Ukraine, the meeting will discuss a more proactive role of European countries in their own security. The US presidential administration insists that NATO allies have been dominated by the White House for too long – and now European countries must take the leading role in the alliance.
