BEIJING – During a telephone conversation with US president donald Trump on wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping identified Taiwan as the most critical issue impacting Sino-American relations. According to reports from Chinese state media Xinhua on Thursday, February 5, 2026, Xi Jinping cautioned Trump to proceed with careful consideration regarding potential arms sales to Taiwan.

Xi Jinping emphasized the importance he places on the relationship with Washington and expressed hope that both nations can navigate their existing differences constructively. President Trump characterized the conversation as “excellent,” describing it as “long and thorough.”

This exchange occurs amidst a series of visits from Western leaders, including british Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to China, signaling a broader effort to strengthen ties with the world’s second-largest economy. President Trump is scheduled to visit china in April, an event he anticipates will be productive, particularly regarding potential trade agreements. Discussions included Beijing’s consideration of increasing its US soybean purchases to 20 million tonnes,a meaningful rise from the current 12 million tonnes.
