USA Swimming Announces 2028 Olympic Trials Standards for Indianapolis

USA Swimming has officially released the qualifying standards and timeline for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, scheduling the meet for June 9–17, 2028, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. The governing body announced that the qualification window will open on December 2, 2026, and run until May 30, 2028, giving athletes roughly a year and a half to secure their spots.

Greg Meehan, the USA Swimming National Team Executive Director and Head Coach, stated in an official press release that the release makes the upcoming home Olympic Games feel tangible for competitors nationwide. For athletes and coaches across the country, these times bring a new level of focus, excitement and anticipation as we continue the journey toward 2028, Meehan said. USA Swimming built the new benchmarks using a predictive model analyzing 15 years of performance data and event-specific trends.

Predictive Modeling Shapes Competitive Fields

To determine the exact time standards, USA Swimming utilized advanced data analytics to project future improvements across every swimming discipline. Patrick Murphy, USA Swimming’s Managing Director of Technology and Data, explained that the modeling aims to keep the meet competitive while still offering opportunities for swimmers to chase an Olympic berth. The goal is to maintain a highly competitive meet while providing meaningful opportunities for athletes to qualify and pursue a place on the Olympic Team, Murphy said in the press release. The organization designed the targets to produce a qualifying field similar to 2024.

World Cup Stops Decide New Stroke 50s Events

The 2028 Olympic program introduces 50s of stroke in backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, creating a unique qualification pathway for these new events. According to the document, the top six finishers in each stroke 50 at select World Cup stops in October 2027 will automatically earn direct entry into the Los Angeles Games. World Aquatics will publish separate competition rules for these specific World Cup events.

National Olympic Committees must confirm these direct qualifications with World Aquatics. If a nation declines a spot or fails to respond in time, the swimmer ranked #1 in the world will inherit the place. Should the world-ranked leader already possess an Olympic entry, the seventh-place finisher from the World Cup final will take the spot. Swimmers who already qualified for the Olympics in a different event can also enter a stroke 50 in Los Angeles, provided they meet the minimum time standard and comply with the maximum two-swimmer per country limit.
