The United States seized a 3-2 lead over the International team after Thursday’s opening fourballs matches at Medinah Country Club in Illinois, beginning their campaign to capture an 11th consecutive Presidents Cup.
“A session win is a session win; we’re going to take it any way we can get it,” Snedeker said.
Early American Successes
Justin Thomas and rookie Jackson Koivun put the first point on the board for the United States with a 4&3 victory over Canada’s Corey Conners and Colombia’s Nico Echavarria. World number one Scottie Scheffler, partnered with long-time friend Sam Burns, secured the 17th hole to fend off a late charge and defeat Min Woo Lee and Sungjae Im, who struggled with missed putts down the stretch.
Two-time major champions Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa added a third point for the hosts. The pair led from the opening hole against Australia’s Adam Scott and reigning Open champion Ryan Fox, closing out a 3&2 win with two holes remaining.
International Team Responses
Geoff Ogilvy’s International side responded with two victories to stay within striking distance ahead of Friday’s alternate shot format. The International team seeks only its second triumph in the biennial contest, 28 years after their first in 1998.
Japanese duo Hideki Matsuyama and debutant Ryo Hisatsune defeated Cameron Young and Xander Schauffele 3&1. Meanwhile, Kim Si-woo and Tom Kim maintained a steady lead throughout their match, posting a 3&2 win against Chris Gotterup and Patrick Cantlay.
Tournament Format and Schedule
The competition continues Friday with five foursome matches. Saturday’s schedule features two sessions split between four four-ball matches in the morning and four foursomes in the afternoon.
All 12 players from each team will compete in Sunday’s singles matches. A total of 15½ points is required for overall victory in the tournament.
