Used EV Market Set to Boom as Off-Lease Vehicles Flood the Market

Electric vehicles (EVs) have experienced fluctuating momentum in the American automotive landscape over the past decade. Initial growth in the 2010s, driven by compliance cars, accelerated with the introduction of longer-range and more feature-rich EVs from brands like Tesla. By the early 2020s, most automakers had committed to transitioning their lineups to electric power. However, recent challenges, including substantial EV losses, decreased consumer demand, and evolving regulations, have prompted some automakers to scale back their ambitious electrification plans.

Despite this shift, a significant increase in the availability of used EVs is anticipated, potentially creating a recent era of affordability for car buyers. Analysts predict that hundreds of thousands of used EVs will enter the secondhand market, offering attractive options for those open to considering a pre-owned electric vehicle.

Supply Goes Up, Prices Go Down

Leasing has been a popular pathway to EV ownership, allowing buyers to benefit from expired tax credits and rebates while mitigating the risk of rapid depreciation – a common characteristic of EVs due to technological advancements and perceived obsolescence. As EV leases initiated in the early part of the decade mature, a surge of off-lease, low-mileage vehicles is now entering the market.

In 2026 alone, over 300,000 off-lease EVs are expected to be returned, with more anticipated in subsequent years. While some original lessees may not opt for another EV, their returned vehicles will be refurbished and offered for sale on the used market at competitive prices. These EVs are generally expected to be in excellent condition with low mileage.

This influx of used EV inventory has the potential to alleviate the affordability challenges that have plagued both the new and used car markets. Lower prices could entice EV-skeptical buyers to consider electric vehicles, while addressing the cost barriers that have historically hindered wider EV adoption.

Is Now the Perfect Time for a Used EV?

High purchase prices and limited driving range have been significant obstacles to broader EV acceptance. However, a used EV, priced substantially below its original MSRP, can become a more compelling option, particularly as a secondary vehicle for households.

An older EV with a real-world range of 150 to 200 miles may not be ideal for long-distance travel, but it could be perfectly suited for commuting or local errands. Used EVs can offer excellent value in terms of performance and features compared to similarly priced gasoline-powered vehicles. Coupled with current gasoline prices, the timing may be optimal for a surge in used EV sales.

The faster depreciation rate of EVs, while a disadvantage for new EV buyers, presents a significant benefit for used car shoppers. As the supply of used EVs increases in the coming months and years, the potential for savings is expected to grow.
