The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln arrived in Laem Chabang, Thailand, on Wednesday following a prolonged deployment across the Middle East and Indian Ocean, according to the U.S. 7th Fleet. The arrival marks the first regular port call for the vessel in nearly nine months, a stretch that included 208 consecutive days at sea and 200 days operating within a combat zone.
Deployment Stint and Operational Context
The USS Abraham Lincoln and its crew of approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines departed San Diego on Nov. 21, operating almost continuously away from home ports, according to the U.S. Navy. Aircraft carriers typically make scheduled port calls every 30 to 45 days for maintenance, resupply, and crew rest. During this deployment, however, the Lincoln’s itinerary included only brief stops at Guam on Dec. 11–12 and Oman on July 7.
While operating in the U.S. Central Command area, the carrier strike group supported combat operations against Iran and enforced a maritime blockade of Iranian ports in the Arabian Sea. The prolonged stint at sea drew attention from families regarding conditions aboard the vessel. Reports highlighted crew fatigue, mental health strains, and logistical challenges with food and water supplies during the patrol. The Lincoln was eventually relieved in the Middle East by the USS George Washington, which arrived in the region on Aug. 19.
Port Visit Details in Thailand
The stop in Thailand is dedicated strictly to rest and recreation for the crew, with no joint military operations scheduled, according to Thai Defense Ministry spokesman Rear Adm. Surasant Kongsiri. Two accompanying warships—the guided-missile destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. and the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls—arrived the same day at the nearby Thai ports of Sriracha and Map T Phut, respectively.
“Our arrival in Laem Chabang provides a well-deserved opportunity for our Sailors and Marines to rest and recharge,” Rear Adm. Robert Loughran, commander of Carrier Strike Group 3, said in a U.S. 7th Fleet news release. “It also underscores the strong and enduring partnership and alliance between the United States and Thailand.”
Local Preparation and Prohibited Activities
The influx of thousands of U.S. service members is expected to provide an economic boost to the nearby resort city of Pattaya, according to local officials. Pattaya Mayor Poramase Ngampiches told Reuters that a fleet of roughly 40 buses will ferry personnel between the port at Laem Chabang and Pattaya.
Local authorities have established restrictions for visiting personnel. “There are certain places and activities that the personnel are prohibited from participating in, such as all kinds of water sports, jet skiing, bungee jumping, wrestling, and boxing,” Mayor Ngampiches stated. Additionally, local police planned increased patrols around Pattaya’s beachfront and nightlife districts following weekend raids that resulted in 40 to 50 detentions for suspected prostitution, according to municipal officials.
