UT Arlington Women’s Tennis Faces In-State Rivals Tarleton State and Texas State

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington women’s tennis is set to continue its season with a pair of matches against in-state opponents this weekend. The Mavericks will first host Tarleton State on Friday at 11 a.m. At the UTA Tennis Center, followed by a road match against Texas State on Saturday at 1 p.m. At the Bobcat Tennis Complex.

Recent Performance

UT Arlington (3-8) has shown improvement in its recent matches. Following competitive contests against Louisiana-Lafayette and Appalachian State, the team secured a 6-1 victory over Butler. A key factor in this turnaround has been their performance in doubles play, winning the doubles point against both Louisiana and Butler after struggling in their first eight dual matches of the spring season.

The pairing of Elizaveta Mladentseva and Sofia Selle has been particularly successful in doubles, winning their matches against both Butler and Louisiana. Vanja Cado also returned to the lineup against Butler after being out of action since February 7th, securing a straight-sets victory on singles Court 3.

In singles action against Butler, all but one court went in favor of the Mavericks. Natalia Gonzalez dominated on Court 5, winning 6-0, 6-2. Tasnime Ahamout and Diana Kaibara also won in straight sets, while Mladentseva won a hard-fought match on Court 6, 7-6 (7-3) in the second set and 10-8 in the super tiebreaker.

Scouting Tarleton State

Tarleton State enters the match with a record of 8-5 this spring. They recently split a weekend series, sweeping UMKC 4-0 but falling to Tulsa 4-2. Both UTA and Tarleton State have faced Appalachian State, with UTA losing 5-2 and Tarleton State winning 4-3.

Aya Ishii has been a standout player for Tarleton State, holding a 10-2 record in dual matches while competing on Courts 1 and 2. She also boasts an 8-3 record in doubles matches.

The Mavericks lead the overall series against the Texans 6-3, with six of those matches occurring since 2021, where UTA holds a 4-3 advantage.

Scouting Texas State

Texas State is currently 7-4 this spring, having recently swept Southeast Missouri State 4-0 on March 8th. Both Texas State and UT Arlington share a common opponent in North Texas, with Texas State losing 4-2 and UTA falling 4-0.

Ireland Simme has been a strong singles player for Texas State, with a 7-2 record including a 4-0 mark on Court 4. The Bobcats have also excelled in doubles play, winning the doubles point in nine of their last ten matches.

UT Arlington has historically dominated the series against Texas State, leading 25-5, including victories in the past ten matches. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2022.
