UTRGV Baseball Edged by Lamar in Southland Conference Matchup

BEAUMONT – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against the Lamar Cardinals on Saturday at Vincent-Beck Stadium. The game marked a Southland Conference (SLC) contest between the two teams.

Game Summary

The Lamar Cardinals (7-4, 2-0 SLC) secured the victory with a single run scored in the first inning. Beau Durbin led off with a ground-rule double and later scored on an RBI-groundout by Tab Tracy.

Pitching Performances

UTRGV’s sophomore pitcher, Harrison Thayer (2-1), delivered a strong performance, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing only two hits while striking out four batters. He did issue three walks during his time on the mound. Graduate student Colton Vercoe followed with two scoreless innings of relief, adding two strikeouts.

Lamar’s Chris Olivier (2-0) pitched a hitless game for 7.0 innings, recording 11 strikeouts and two walks. Fabian Ramirez came in to relieve Olivier.

Vaqueros Offense

Junior Chayton Fischer recorded UTRGV’s first hit of the game, a 1-out ground-rule double in the eighth inning off Fabian Ramirez. The Vaqueros managed to load the bases, but Nathan Darden induced a double play to end the inning, preserving Lamar’s lead.

Closing Out the Game

Darden secured his third save of the season by recording the final five outs for Lamar.

Next Game

UTRGV and Lamar will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
