University of Virginia Darden School of Business Hosts Admissions and AI Curriculum Webinar

The University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business drew 673 registrants from 62 countries during a Monday webinar outlining how the institution prepares students for modern corporate leadership. The online event, titled “Why Darden? Our Next Chapter,” featured presentations from Yael Grushka-Cockayne, dean of the Darden School of Business, and Willie Green, senior assistant dean of admissions for Darden.

Grushka-Cockayne assumed her post as Darden’s 10th dean on August 1, following the departure of University President Scott Beardsley, who stepped down from the role in January 2026. During the webinar, leadership addressed institutional priorities including artificial intelligence integration, decision-making under uncertainty, and the long-term financial return of a Master of Business Administration degree.

Artificial Intelligence Integration and Classroom Case Methods

Darden faculty are incorporating more than 25 electives dedicated to artificial intelligence and data analytics into the curriculum. Grushka-Cockayne told attendees that the school utilizes AI tools allowing students to converse with simulated historical figures and corporate stakeholders prior to traditional classroom case discussions.

Despite these technological additions, Green noted that automation relies on old situations and practices rather than unprecedented scenarios. Green emphasized that human empathy and critical evaluation remain essential for resolving novel operational challenges. The school also maintains the LaCross Institute for Ethical AI in Business, founded in 2024 to study how machine learning affects employees, customers, and surrounding communities.

Tuition Costs and Master of Business Administration Return on Investment

As higher education expenses continue to rise, prospective applicants must evaluate the financial commitment required for graduate business education. According to Darden’s official cost of attendance figures for the 2026-27 academic year, first-year full-time tuition and fees total $83,000 for Virginia residents and $88,000 for non-Virginia residents.

Total estimated expenses—incorporating housing, food, and transportation—reach $118,196 annually for in-state students and $123,196 for out-of-state students. Grushka-Cockayne advised participants to measure the value of the degree through lifelong career trajectories, professional networks, and adaptability rather than short-term financial gains alone.

Admissions Deadlines and Candidate Evaluation Standards

The admissions committee evaluates candidates based on academic records, professional history, personal essays, recommendations, and structured interviews. Green outlined key traits sought in applicants, including intellectual curiosity, humility, and the ability to operate effectively without complete information.

Applicants seeking admission to the full-time Master of Business Administration Class of 2029 can submit materials across multiple application rounds during the 2026-27 admissions cycle. Following the January 7 deadline, remaining application deadlines are scheduled for March 1, April 1, and May 1.
