Valerie Searches for Missing Son Nathan Fighting in Ukraine
Valerie continues a nine-month search for answers after her son Nathan went missing while fighting for Russia in Ukraine. At the start of his military service, Nathan recorded a goodbye video and sent it to his wife to pass on to his mother in the event of his death. Valerie watched the recording once before turning it off, yet she still maintains hope that her son remains alive.
Foreign Office Provides Limited Support for Missing National
The search for information has involved reaching out to government agencies and charities in both the United Kingdom and Russia. Valerie contacted the Foreign Office and received a caseworker, but officials admitted they could not help and she says, “Nobody tells you what to do.” The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated it was aware of reports that a British national was missing after fighting for Russia in Ukraine and remained in contact with the family. The department advises against all travel to Russia and notes that its ability to provide consular support is severely limited. Direct inquiries to Russian authorities regarding Nathan’s last known whereabouts yielded no results because officials claimed the information was classified.

Daily Search Efforts and Hope for Identification
Valerie spends her spare time trawling the internet for clues and watching official body exchanges between Russia and Ukraine broadcast on Reuters. None of the reports have contained Nathan’s name so far. She remains hopeful that her son might still be identified if captured, noting that Russian authorities possess his DNA from his baby.
