Highway Construction Extends Greenway Closure Through 2026

The Greenway della Valtrompia will remain off-limits to cyclists and pedestrians between piazzale Europa and the “ponte Rosso” in Sarezzo for at least another year. The Comunità Montana di Valle Trompia has issued ordinance 5/2026, officially extending the closure through August 31, 2026, to accommodate the ongoing construction of the A4-Valtrompia highway link.

Construction Demands and Shifting Deadlines

The closure of the Crocevia segment is a direct byproduct of the “bretella” project, which aims to connect the A4 motorway to the Valtrompia valley. The construction firm Salc requested the extension to align with their current project timeline. While officials hold out hope for a reopening between late July and August, the actual date remains tethered to the pace of work on the site.

For regular users of the path, the extension is merely the latest in a series of setbacks. Originally slated to reopen in November 2025, the target date has been pushed back repeatedly—first to February 2026, then to June 30, and now to the end of August 2026. This pattern of delays has drawn sharp criticism from locals, who point out that signage along the route still displays the long-expired November 2025 deadline.

Systemic Disruptions Along the Mella River

The Crocevia disruption is one of three critical bottlenecks currently fracturing the Greenway’s continuity. The status of the path is as follows:

Ciclopedonale e Greenway della Valtrompia
  • Crocevia (Sarezzo): Closed until at least August 31, 2026, for highway construction.
  • San Vigilio to Cailina: Impacted by highway construction, though a temporary diversion has been established at the side of the road to allow pedestrian and bicycle transit.
  • Zanano to Gardone Valtrompia: Currently closed due to safety concerns following a landslide.

Repair Status for Landslide-Damaged Sections

Regarding the section crippled by the landslide, the Comunità Montana has confirmed that repair contracts are now in place. While the project missed its anticipated spring start date, the administration maintains that the issue is currently in the process of resolution.

Summer Transit Expectations

The Comunità Montana continues to monitor the construction sites with the stated goal of restoring the full route along the Mella river. Until that work is complete, cyclists and pedestrians should prepare for continued detours and transit limitations throughout the summer months.
