Arena Varna Stadium: Construction Progress and 2027 Completion Targeted

The Arena Varna stadium, a major sports and entertainment venue in Bulgaria, is on track for completion in 2027. The update was announced at a press conference held at the National Press Club of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) in Varna on February 24, 2026.

Project Details and Capacity

Stanislav Vasilev, the technical manager of the facility, stated that construction is currently underway. The stadium will have a seating capacity of 22,000, according to Plamen Andreev, the executive director of Varna Sports Complex AD.

Infrastructure and Design

The Arena Varna complex will include more than 700 parking spaces in an underground parking facility. A modular stage is also planned for hosting concerts and other large-scale outdoor events. The total area of the complex spans 127,000 square meters, with over half dedicated to sports infrastructure. Developers aim to create a modern urban area, extending the stadium’s use beyond occasional football matches.

Construction Timeline

As of February 24, 2026, the project is in the construction phase, with four sectors underway, some of which are already completed. Visors are being installed on two of the sectors. Rough construction is expected to be finished within four months, followed by finishing work and final commissioning.

Financial Backing and Investment

The necessary funds for completing the stadium are secured through a capital increase to 43,826,000 euros. The state will contribute 15,339,000 euros as a new shareholder, even as Chimimport remains the main shareholder with a 65 percent stake and a commitment of 28,487,000 euros. Approximately 32,500,000 euros has already been invested in the project since its inception. Funds are being deposited into a dedicated account solely for the stadium’s construction.

Sustainability and Commercial Development

Ivelina Shaban, the financial consultant for Varna Sports Complex, acknowledged the high operating costs associated with a facility of this scale. To ensure financial stability, the company plans to develop additional commercial areas within the stadium and its surrounding space, including three residential buildings. The development plan also includes renovating a sports gymnastics building and constructing a new swimming pool, alongside creating a large public square.

Future Outlook

The planned commercial and residential developments are intended to generate sustainable revenue, reducing the financial burden on municipal and state budgets. Further financing will be sought for these additional projects. The Arena Varna is expected to meet FIFA and UEFA requirements, potentially hosting international matches for the Bulgarian national team.
