Venezuelan opposition leader maría Corina Machado intends to travel to Oslo to accept the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, despite facing important risks and opposition from the Venezuelan government. The Nobel Committee awarded Machado the prize in October 2024 for her work promoting democratic rights in Venezuela and her struggle for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy [Nobel Prize].

Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chairman of the Nobel Committee, confirmed Machado’s intention to attend, stating,”She herself is clear that she will come.” Though, Frydnes also acknowledged the dangers involved, noting the Venezuelan regime has explicitly stated its desire to detain her [NRK].

The Venezuelan Attorney General, Tarek William Saab, has accused Machado of “conspiracies, incitement to hatred and terrorism,” and stated that leaving the country while under investigation would be considered fleeing justice [AFP]. These accusations are widely viewed as politically motivated attempts to silence opposition to the Nicolás Maduro regime.

Machado has been a vocal critic of Maduro and has been actively involved in efforts to organise free and fair elections in Venezuela. She has faced previous attempts to disqualify her from holding public office and has reported living in hiding within Venezuela to avoid arrest [Reuters].

The situation raises concerns about the Venezuelan government’s commitment to democratic principles and its willingness to allow opposition leaders to exercise their rights. International observers are closely monitoring the developments and calling for Machado’s safety and freedom of movement. The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is scheduled for December 10th in Oslo.
