Venezuelan Migrant Undergoes Surgery After Federal Agent Shooting

A 28-year-old Venezuelan immigrant shot by a federal immigration agent in Austin, Texas, underwent surgery on Thursday to remove a bullet lodged in his back for nearly two weeks.

Court Appearance in a Wheelchair

Wilber Rafael Garcés Pérez appeared in a Texas court on Wednesday in a wheelchair with an immobilized arm. He remains under custody facing a charge for allegedly assaulting an agent while attempting to evade arrest.

Federal authorities stated that Garcés Pérez struck an agent with his vehicle’s side mirror on September 20 while trying to flee. The federal agent who discharged his firearm and was reportedly hit by the car mirror was not wearing a body camera during the incident.

Garcés Pérez faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the assault charge. Fabiana Melendez Ruiz, a spokesperson for his legal team, confirmed that the bullet was successfully extracted during the surgical procedure and that Garcés Pérez is currently recovering under the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Conflicting Accounts of the Austin Pursuit

The shooting has sparked protests and public outcry in the Texas capital regarding the offensive of Donald Trump against immigration, including the conduct of agents.

Garcés Pérez maintained that an immigration enforcement vehicle rammed his car, causing his vehicle to spin before he was shot. Conversely, federal agents informed investigators that Garcés Pérez attempted to strike an officer with his automobile at the conclusion of the vehicle pursuit before the agent fired his weapon.

Video footage presented during Wednesday’s court proceedings captured law enforcement officers detaining Garcés Pérez in Austin, where he was delivering food for DoorDash.
