Venus Williams Seeks First Win of 2026 at Australian Open
venus Williams is aiming for her first victory of the year as she faces Olga Danilovic in the first round of the Australian Open on sunday at John Cain Arena. the match marks williams’ latest comeback attempt, following a first-round loss at the U.S.Open last August.
Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, is currently ranked 576th due to limited competitive play. She also experienced first-round defeats in warm-up tournaments in New Zealand and Hobart earlier this month. A win against the 68th-ranked Danilovic could perhaps set up a second-round clash with third-seeded Coco Gauff.
Despite recent setbacks, Williams remains focused on the process and her mindset. “That’s the thing about sport – you keep stepping up to the line, and while there is nothing to prove,it’s all about the attitude and the effort. No one can control that. Controlling that part is really the win,” Williams stated.
She also emphasized the importance of self-compassion as she rebuilds her match form. “At this point, I need to be kind to myself, because I’m getting so many things right, but, you know, there has been a lack of playing matches,” she said. “So I’m playing well. I’m setting myself up each point to win points and controlling the points. That’s exactly how I’d want to play, and I’m playing the tennis I need to play.”
Danilovic, a 24-year-old left-hander from Serbia, is appearing in her 11th Grand Slam tournament and her third Australian Open. Her best Grand Slam result came at the Australian Open last year, reaching the fourth round.
