“Yale University Resumes Use of Standardized Test Scores in Admission Process: Impact on Students and Families”

Yale University has decided to once again consider standardized test scores as part of their admission process. This decision has implications for both students and families.

Yale University’s choice to reintroduce standardized test scores for admission reflects the ongoing discussion about the significance of these tests in the college admissions procedure. While test-optional policies aimed to promote a more impartial and comprehensive system, worries about potential disadvantages for students from less affluent backgrounds have led universities such as Yale and Dartmouth to reconsider their approach. As the landscape of higher education continues to change, it will be intriguing to observe the effects of this decision on future college admissions and the wider discourse about fair access to education.

“Test Flexible” Policy

It should be noted that MIT, like Yale and Dartmouth, has also decided to reinstate its testing requirement for 2022.

Effects on Students from Disadvantaged Socioeconomic Backgrounds

Although Yale and Dartmouth have chosen to bring back mandatory standardized testing, it should be acknowledged that they are in the minority. Numerous universities have opted to continue their test-optional policies as the pandemic situation improves. The number of students taking the SAT has decreased from 2.2 million in 2020 to 1.7 million in 2022, highlighting the influence of the pandemic on standardized testing.

Notable Exceptions

Yale University has made a notable decision to reintroduce standardized test scores as a requirement for admission. This choice follows suit with another Ivy League institution in ending their test-optional policies that were implemented during the Covid-19 crisis. Yale officials believe that these policies may have unintentionally put students from lower-income backgrounds at a disadvantage, as they could have potentially benefited from submitting their test scores.

Yale University’s recent decision mirrors that of Dartmouth College in February. Dartmouth College discovered through an examination that numerous students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, despite achieving strong scores around 1,400 on the SAT, opted not to submit their scores out of fear that they did not meet the perfect score of 1,600. This pattern sheds light on a possible disadvantage for these students under test-optional policies.

Yale University has implemented a new policy for the fall 2025 admissions cycle that will require applicants to submit standardized test scores. However, the university is also adopting a “test flexible” approach, meaning that students can choose to submit scores from subject-based AP or IB tests instead of SAT or ACT scores. This offers an alternative for students who may excel in certain subjects but struggle with standardized tests.
