Dartmouth College discovered through an examination that numerous students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, despite achieving strong scores around 1,400 on the SAT, opted not to submit their scores out of fear that they did not meet the perfect score of 1,600. This pattern sheds light on a possible disadvantage for these students under test-optional policies.
Yale University has implemented a new policy for the fall 2025 admissions cycle that will require applicants to submit standardized test scores. However, the university is also adopting a “test flexible” approach, meaning that students can choose to submit scores from subject-based AP or IB tests instead of SAT or ACT scores. This offers an alternative for students who may excel in certain subjects but struggle with standardized tests.
