Verizon Mobile Service Restored After Outage Impacts Thousands Nationwide
Thousands of Verizon customers across major U.S. metropolitan areas experienced a multi-hour service outage on Saturday afternoon, according to data tracking site Downdetector. Voice services went down around 3:30 p.m. ET, prompting more than 13,000 complaints at peak volume before engineers resolved the issue.
Geographic Scope and Downdetector Tracking Data
The disruption heavily impacted major urban centers, including New York, Los Angeles, and Boston, according to outage tracking figures compiled by CNBC. Beyond primary Verizon subscribers, the network failure created secondary problems for users on other major mobile networks. Downdetector metrics showed that hundreds of customers using AT&T and T-Mobile US could not complete calls through to Verizon numbers.
Company Response and Technical Resolution
Verizon engineers restored normal voice functions after several hours of downtime. “Our engineers have resolved the issue that affected voice services for some wireless customers this afternoon,” the company stated to CNBC. While a separate Verizon spokesperson attributed a regional disruption in New Mexico to multiple fiber cuts, the carrier did not specify an exact cause for the nationwide mobile service interruption. Verizon recommended that any customers continuing to experience connection difficulties should restart their mobile devices.
