Chicago Veteran Empowers Fellow Service Members Through Fitness and Community Support
Despite her small stature, Denisse Montoya is making a significant impact on the lives of veterans in Illinois. Through a combination of physical fitness programs, community building and advocacy, Montoya is providing a vital support system for those who have served.
From Air Force Security Forces to Veteran Advocacy
Denisse Montoya served in the U.S. Air Force as a security forces specialist from 2008 to 2012. Following her service, she dedicated herself to supporting the veteran community. In October 2025, Montoya became the Development & Program Coordinator at Illinois Joining Forces, building on nearly a decade of experience at the Department of Veterans Affairs Illinois Joining Forces.
Boot Camp for Body and Mind
Montoya teams with Illinois Joining Forces, the Jesse Brown VA in Chicago, and Merging Vets and Players to lead a challenging boot camp workout. The program focuses on physical fitness and camaraderie, offering veterans a therapeutic outlet through movement and connection. “It’s like, OK, let’s do this together,” Montoya told WGN 9 in Chicago. “Let’s lift you up, let’s lift each other up.” Military.com
The workouts are designed to be challenging, pushing participants to their limits while fostering a sense of mutual support. Veterans share their experiences and offer encouragement, embodying the principle of “no soldier left behind.”
Beyond the Workout: Connection and Resources
Montoya’s commitment extends beyond the gym. After each workout, participants gather to discuss issues affecting their daily lives, providing a space for veterans to find direction and purpose after military service. She recognizes the profound impact of military service, noting that she’s “seen peers going to combat and come back and they’re like a completely different person in their personality, character, physically, emotionally, mentally.” Military.com
Montoya also produces a monthly newsletter highlighting local events and veteran services. She actively works to connect veterans with resources related to housing, employment, and family support.
Recognition and Advocacy
Montoya’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. In 2025, the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs named her one of 25 Illinois Women Veteran Leaders. She also received the 2025 True Grit Award from Merging Vets & Players Illinois Joining Forces. In 2024, she successfully advocated for the adoption of Women Veteran’s Day as an official city holiday in Chicago, celebrated annually on June 12.
A Game Changer for Illinois Veterans
Amos Albert, a Navy veteran and regular participant in Montoya’s boot camp, describes her as “a game changer in the state of Illinois for women in veteran’s spaces.” He notes that “when names start getting dropped, Denisse Montoya’s will usually come up.”
Montoya finds fulfillment in her work, stating, “It makes me happy, so why not do something that makes you happy? The things you think you’re giving – you’re getting 10 times that much more back.” Military.com
