Viatris to Close Dublin Plant, Impacting 340 Jobs

US pharmaceutical company Viatris has announced plans to wind down and close its manufacturing plant in Damastown, West Dublin, potentially impacting approximately 340 jobs. While there will be no immediate job losses, the company anticipates the production wind-down will begin in the first half of 2028 and be completed by the end of that year. RTÉ first reported the news on February 27, 2026.

Phased Closure and Redundancy Packages

Viatris intends to consult with employee representatives to develop a staff reduction plan, offering comprehensive redundancy packages to affected employees, according to David Delaney, Head of Policy and Health & Value at Viatris. The company is also exploring potential redeployment opportunities within its other Irish sites, where it currently has open positions.

Reasons for Closure

The Damastown facility manufactures generic medicines. The decision to close the plant is linked to rising costs and a strategic review that revealed declining demand in certain parts of Viatris’ global portfolio and excess capacity within its network. Viatris emphasized that the closure does not reflect negatively on the commitment and work ethic of its Irish employees.

Viatris’ Irish Operations

Viatris maintains a significant presence in Ireland, with manufacturing and research & development facilities in Dublin and Galway, as well as a Dublin-based development, commercial, and operations hub. The company employs over 1,000 people across these Irish sites.

Recent Closures and Restructuring

This closure follows previous Viatris restructuring efforts in Ireland. In 2024, the company announced plans to close its manufacturing plant in Little Island, Cork, by 2028, affecting around 200 jobs. A plant in Baldoyle, Dublin, was closed in 2020 with the loss of 440 jobs, and a further 70 roles were cut from its Irish corporate head office in 2021.

Company Background

Viatris was formed in 2020 through the merger of Mylan and Upjohn, a former division of Pfizer.
