Gyökeres Ends Goal drought as Arsenal Secure First Leg Advantage Against Chelsea

Arsenal forward Viktor Gyökeres broke a ten-game drought of goals from open play, finding the back of the net in a crucial 3-2 victory over Chelsea in the first leg of their semifinal clash. The goal, his eighth of the season, propelled Arsenal to a significant advantage heading into the return leg.

The Swede’s strike came early in the first half, capitalizing on a well-orchestrated play initiated by Ben White, who had previously opened the scoring for the Gunners. Gyökeres demonstrated his attacking prowess, lunging forward to convert the chance and alleviate pressure stemming from a recent scoring slump. His previous goal for Arsenal had come nearly a month prior, a penalty against Everton. Before that, his last goal from open play dated back to November 1st against Burnley, leaving fans eager for a return to form.

“That’s what I need to do and I can do it more frequently enough,” Gyökeres stated to Sky Sports after the match. “We won today and we just have to continue now.”

Beyond his goal, Gyökeres showcased his playmaking ability, providing a key assist in the 70th minute to Martin Zubimendi, extending Arsenal’s lead to 3-1. While substituted in the 82nd minute, his impact on the game was undeniable.

The match, a tightly contested affair, ultimately concluded with a 3-2 scoreline in favor of Arsenal. The two sides will reconvene for the second leg on Febuary 3rd at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, where the Gunners will aim to defend their lead and secure a place in the final.
