Viktoria Köln opened its eighth 3. Liga season with a 5-2 defeat against SSV Jahn Regensburg on August 8, 2026, according to match reports from Sportschau. Playing at home, Köln started the match as the stronger side before defensive errors and clinical finishing from the visitors secured a comfortable win for Regensburg.
Early Missed Chances and Regensburg’s Efficiency
According to Sportschau, Köln created the first major scoring opportunity in the fifth minute when Regensburg defender Benedikt Bauer played a wayward pass straight to Viktorias Niklas Castelle. Castelle rounded goalkeeper Hannes Hermann and targeted the far corner, but Regensburg defender Leopold Wurm deflected the shot away. Despite controlling the early tempo, Köln failed to capitalize on its territorial dominance.
Regensburg absorbed the pressure and punished the hosts against the run of play. In the 28th minute, a long throw-in reached Patrick Hobsch, who redirected the ball with his chest into the path of Lucas Hermes. Hermes sprinted into the penalty area and drove a high shot into the far corner to break the deadlock. Just before halftime, in the 38th minute, Bauer delivered a long diagonal ball to Hermes, who dribbled into the left side of the box and slotted a low shot past the goalkeeper to extend Regensburg’s lead to 2-0.
Second-Half Goals Seal the Match
Köln responded immediately after the interval. Kilian Jakob drove down the left flank to the goalline and crossed into the area, where a clearance attempt by Sascha Hingerl fell directly to Castelle. Castelle fired home from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The comeback attempt was short-lived. Just five minutes later, Regensburg launched a swift counter-attack down the right side that ended with Adrian Fein striking a low shot from 16 meters into the bottom left corner, making it 3-1. David Philipp added a fourth goal in the 66th minute following a quickly taken free-kick by Fein. Fein then converted a penalty kick in the 74th minute after Jakob fouled Hermes inside the box. Noah Maboulou scored a late consolation goal for Viktoria in the 82nd minute, but the match finished 5-2 in favor of the visitors.
