Vincenzo D’Agostino, Prolific Italian Lyricist, Dies at 64

Naples mourns the loss of Vincenzo D’Agostino, a celebrated poet and lyricist responsible for over 3,600 songs, many of which became iconic hits for prominent Italian artists. D’Agostino passed away on February 17, 2026, at the Ospedale del Mare in Naples, following a cardiac arrest resulting from a respiratory crisis. He had been battling lung cancer for several months.

A Career Spanning Four Decades

Throughout a 40-year career, D’Agostino penned lyrics for a diverse range of artists, achieving over 20 million record sales worldwide. His work encompassed the traditional Neapolitan songbook, collaborating with artists such as Nino D’Angelo, Carmelo Zappulla, Mario Merola and Gigi Finizio, as well as achieving national pop success with Gigi D’Alessio and Gianni Fiorellino. More recently, his lyrics contributed to the modern streaming phenomenon of Sal Da Vinci’s “Rossetto e caffè,” which garnered 450 million clicks across download platforms, YouTube, and TikTok.

Collaboration with Gigi D’Alessio

D’Agostino’s partnership with Gigi D’Alessio proved particularly fruitful, resulting in some of the singer’s most beloved songs, including “Annarè,” “Cient’anne,” “Non mollare mai,” “Mon Amour,” and “Como suena el corazon.” Their collaboration extended to the Sanremo Music Festival, with songs like “Non dirgli mai” (2000), “Tu che ne sai” (2001), “L’amore che non c’è” (2005), and “Respirare” (2012), the latter performed with Loredana Bertè.

Contributions to the Sanremo Festival

Beyond his work with D’Alessio, D’Agostino also contributed to the Sanremo Festival by writing the lyrics for Anna Tatangelo’s “Ragazza di periferia” (2005) and Sal Da Vinci’s “Non riesco a farti innamorare” (2009), which placed third in the competition.

Funeral Arrangements

A viewing will be held on February 18th, from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at the Santi Giovanni e Paolo Church (via Santi Giovanni e Paolo 8) in Naples. The funeral service will take place on Thursday, February 19th, at the Santi Giovanni e Paolo Parish in Piazza Ottocalli.
