Virginia Breeze Launches Tidewater Current, Connecting the Valley to the Coast The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) has launched the Tidewater Current, a new intercity bus route that provides the first east-to-west service in the Virginia Breeze network. The route began operations on April 20, 2026, connecting Harrisonburg in the Shenandoah Valley to Virginia Beach and the Hampton Roads region. Academy Bus operates the Tidewater Current under contract with DRPT. The service runs seven days a week, 365 days a year, offering travelers a direct connection between coastal Virginia and communities along the I-64 corridor. Planned stops include Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Newport News, Williamsburg, New Kent, Richmond International Airport, Richmond Main Street Station, Charlottesville, Staunton, and Harrisonburg. The route strengthens travel options between Coastal Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, filling a gap in regional transit connectivity. Passengers on the Tidewater Current receive amenities consistent with the broader Virginia Breeze network, including roomy seating, restrooms, baggage storage, free Wi-Fi, and in-seat power outlets. Each passenger is allowed one free checked bag and one carry-on item. Ticket prices for the Tidewater Current range from $15 to $60, depending on the selected trip. Travelers can purchase tickets online or present an eTicket on a mobile device when boarding. To celebrate the launch, Virginia Breeze offered a flash sale with 25% off Tidewater Current travel taken in April and May 2026. The promotion encouraged Virginians to plan spring getaways across the Commonwealth while using the new service. The Tidewater Current marks a significant expansion of the Virginia Breeze program, which previously operated only north-south routes such as the Valley Flyer (Blacksburg to Washington, D.C.), Capital Connector (Martinsville to Richmond to D.C.), Piedmont Express (Danville to D.C.), and Highlands Rhythm (Bristol to D.C.). By adding an east-west axis, the network now provides more comprehensive coverage across Virginia. DRPT selected Academy Bus as the operator following a competitive process, citing the company’s experience in providing safe, reliable, and comfortable intercity service. The partnership aims to enhance transportation access for residents, students, and visitors traveling between Virginia’s coastal and valley regions.
