The Christmas holidays are here, but so is a rapidly spreading flu epidemic. It’s being fueled by a more contagious K variant. Just at the end of November,only Nouvelle-Aquitaine,Normandy,and Ile-de-France were considered to be in an “epidemic” state by Public Health France.
Now, just fifteen days later, the situation has drastically changed. “The hexagonal map of France is wholly red,” explained Bruno Coignard, director of infectious diseases at Public Health France, during a press conference on December 17.Emergency room visits and hospitalizations for the flu jumped 60% nationally between the first and second weeks of December. That’s a big increase!
Though, the epidemic isn’t hitting every region equally.The map below shows how the flu is impacting different departments. The redder the department, the higher the percentage of emergency room visits related to the flu.
