Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently drew a clear distinction between what he considers “real” decentralized finance (DeFi) systems and the centralized yield strategies in stablecoins. In a discussion on His comments come at a time when DeFi’s dominant use cases, particularly in credit markets that rely on fiat-backed stablecoins such as USDC, are under renewed scrutiny.
Buterin particularly criticized products based on “USDC yields” as they rely heavily on centralized issuers and do little to reduce issuer or counterparty risk. He proposed two alternative stablecoin models that he believes are more consistent with the original ethos of DeFi: an Ether (ETH)-backed algorithmic stablecoin and a real-world asset (RWA)-backed algorithmic stablecoin that is over-collateralized.
An ETH-backed algorithmic stablecoin, even if most of the liquidity comes from users minting the token by borrowing against crypto collateral, could shift risk to markets rather than a single issuer. Buterin emphasized that the ability to transfer counterparty risk to a market maker is a significant feature. For stablecoins backed by real assets, risk conditions could be improved if they were conservatively structured and sufficiently diversified so that the failure of a single backing asset would not break the peg.
Buterin’s comments come at a time when credit markets on Ethereum are heavily centered on USDC. There are more than $4.1 billion of USDC deployed on Aave’s main Ethereum implementation, which represents a significant portion of the total market volume. A similar pattern is evident at Morpho, which optimizes lending across Aave and Compound-based markets. Buterin calls for a return to DeFi roots by emphasizing the need to decentralize risk and not rely on centralized issuers.
