Ohio Gubernatorial Campaign Upended by Contentious Attack Ad

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton faces a political firestorm in Ohio following the release of a $4 million campaign advertisement financed by her Republican opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy. Published on October 20, 2026, the commercial features Acton’s estranged mother, Donna Arthur, who accuses her daughter of lying about her childhood and urges voters to reject her candidacy. The controversy has drawn sharp rebukes from both Democrats and prominent Republicans while earning a vigorous defense from U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Escalation of the Political Dispute

The campaign ad centers on Arthur claiming that her daughter is dishonest regarding her past, specifically disputing Acton’s account of growing up in a tent. What the commercial omits, however, is the family history involving Acton’s stepfather, who was charged with sexually assaulting Acton when she was a child. Arthur subsequently lost custody of her children, and Acton has not seen her mother since 1978. Ramaswamy’s campaign has stated that Arthur did not receive any payment for participating in the advertisement.

In response, the Acton campaign released a counter-advertisement featuring her brother, who corroborated the childhood abuse and condemned Ramaswamy for weaponizing sexual trauma for political gain. The ad drew condemnation. Minority leader Allison Russo, a Democrat, denounced the spot on X as “among the most vile political attacks I’ve ever seen,” while Meghan McCain called the commercial “dastardly” and stated it should never have been created. Shame on whatever consultant firm created this, Meghan McCain wrote on X, while Republican campaign strategist Liz Blair stated that the commercial generated greater sympathy for Acton rather than less.

Trump defends ad as Ohio Republicans urge its removal

The controversy has split the Republican Party in Ohio and beyond. Ohio’s Republican Governor, Mike DeWine, publicly urged Ramaswamy to pull the advertisement down, while former U.S. Representative Jim Renacci warned on X that the campaign could lose substantial support if local Republicans failed to distance themselves from the attack.

Despite the backlash from state figures, President Donald Trump defended the commercial on Truth Social. Trump argued that the public outcry is hypocritical and encouraged Ramaswamy to keep the four-million-dollar ad running, asserting that voters deserved to hear the mother’s accusations against her daughter. Campaign manager Jonathan Ewing asserted that the advertisement could secure a victory for their campaign.
