VMRO to Support Progressive Bulgaria in Upcoming Elections, Leadership to Remain Separate

Sofia, Bulgaria – The Bulgarian nationalist party VMRO – Bulgarian National Movement (VMRO-BND) announced its support for the “Progressive Bulgaria” coalition ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections. However, VMRO leader Krasimir Karakachanov stated that the party’s leadership will not appear on “Progressive Bulgaria’s” candidate lists.

Karakachanov explained the decision during an interview on bTV, emphasizing that the support is based on dissatisfaction with the current political landscape in Bulgaria. He noted a widespread desire for change among the population, with many feeling that the major political forces have been repeatedly involved in various governing coalitions in recent years.

Local Participation Possible

While the leadership of VMRO will not be directly integrated into “Progressive Bulgaria’s” lists, Karakachanov did not rule out the possibility of individual VMRO representatives being invited to participate in campaigns or appear on candidate lists at the local level. Discussions are currently underway regarding potential candidates in two or three constituencies.

No Post-Election Negotiations

Karakachanov firmly denied any political negotiations for positions following the April 19 parliamentary vote. He reiterated that the support for “Progressive Bulgaria” is a matter of principle, driven by a desire for political change rather than personal gain.

Criticism of Foreign Policy

During the interview, Karakachanov also voiced criticism of Bulgaria’s current foreign policy, asserting that the country does not actively protect its national interests. He specifically commented on the deployment of tanker planes at Sofia Airport, stating that he would not have authorized such a decision if he were the Minister of Defense, believing Bulgaria should avoid direct involvement in ongoing conflicts.
