Volkswagen Recalls Nearly 100,000 EVs Due to Battery Module Defects

Volkswagen Group is recalling approximately 94,000 electric vehicles globally, citing potential defects in battery modules that could reduce driving range and, in rare cases, pose a fire risk. The recall affects several models built on the MEB platform, including the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.Buzz, and ID.Buzz Cargo, as well as the Cupra Born.

Recall Details and Affected Vehicles

According to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), the recall impacts 74,579 Volkswagen ID. Series vehicles and 19,452 Cupra Borns. Electrive and Electrek reported the news on March 24, 2026. The affected vehicles were manufactured between February 7, 2022, and August 23, 2024. Production took place at Volkswagen’s Zwickau plant in Germany for the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, and Cupra Born models, and at VW Commercial Vehicles in Hanover for the ID. Buzz and ID.Buzz Cargo.

Approximately 22,182 Volkswagen-badged vehicles and 5,976 Cupra units are located in the German market. Electric Vehicles details that roughly 28,000 vehicles are registered in Germany.

The Issue: Faulty Battery Modules

The KBA has identified that individual modules within the high-voltage batteries may not meet specification. This can lead to a reduction in driving range and the illumination of a warning light on the vehicle’s dashboard. The KBA also notes a potential risk of fire, whereas no incidents of property damage or personal injury have been reported to date. Reuters confirms the battery module concerns.

Volkswagen’s Response

Volkswagen will implement a two-step process to address the issue. First, a software update will be installed to detect any irregularities in the battery. Second, the high-voltage battery modules will be inspected, and any modules found to deviate from specifications will be replaced. Customers will be contacted in the coming days to schedule appointments at their local service centers.

Previous Battery-Related Recall

This recall follows a similar action taken by Volkswagen in January 2026, affecting 43,881 ID.4 vehicles in the US due to concerns about potential battery overheating and fire risk. Electrek reported on this earlier recall, which also involved software updates and potential battery replacements.
