Volvo EX90: New Zealand’s First Premium 7-Seat Electric SUV Arrives

Volvo New Zealand is launching the EX90, a fully electric seven-seater SUV, marking a significant step in the brand’s electrification strategy. The EX90, named the 2025 World Luxury Car of the Year, is unique in the New Zealand market as the only premium fully electric SUV offering seven seats.

Pricing and Variants

The Volvo EX90 is available in two variants: the Plus Twin Motor AWD, starting from $149,990 + ORC, and the Ultra Twin Motor Performance AWD, priced at $159,990 + ORC. Volvo New Zealand anticipates strong demand for the Ultra Performance model.

Range and Performance

Both EX90 variants boast a substantial 106kWh battery, providing a WLTP range of up to 600km. Charging times are competitive, with the ability to charge from 10-80% in approximately 22 minutes using a 350kW DC fast charger. Volvo states pre-conditioning the battery can maximize range and charging efficiency.

The Plus model delivers 335kW/670Nm, accelerating from 0-100km/h in 5.5 seconds. The Ultra Performance variant significantly increases power to 500kW/870Nm, achieving a 0-100km/h time of just 4.2 seconds.

Design and Interior

The EX90 features a modern Scandinavian design, incorporating elements from the EX30, such as the closed front end and stacked rear lights. It utilizes a high percentage of recycled steel and plastic, and the Chengdu factory where it’s built operates on 100% renewable electricity.

Inside, the EX90 offers a luxurious and technologically advanced cabin. Key features include a 14.5-inch central infotainment screen, a 9-inch driver display, a Bowers & Wilkins audio system with a “tweeter-on-top” design, and a four-zone climate control system. Interior materials include Forest Stewardship Council-approved wood decor and options for wool upholstery or Nappa leather.

Technology and Safety

Volvo designates the EX90 as its “first software-defined vehicle,” with many of the car’s computer systems developed in-house. The EX90 has achieved a five-star ANCAP safety rating and was named the safest large SUV tested in 2025. Driven Car Guide highlights Volvo’s confidence in the EX90’s unique position in the market.

Comparison to Alternatives

Currently, the EX90 occupies a unique position as the sole premium seven-seat electric SUV available in New Zealand. Potential alternatives include the Volvo XC90 T8 Ultra plug-in hybrid ($161,990), Audi Q7 ($162,990-$208,990), BMW X5 ($157,400-$178,400), and Mercedes-Benz GLE ($153,300-$264,300). The Tesla Model Y Long Range with optional 6-seat interior ($83,900) offers a different proposition, but with only six seats.

Future Models

Volvo New Zealand will also introduce the EX60 later in 2026, which will offer an even longer range of up to 810km on a single charge. Volvo anticipates the EX90 and EX60 will drive significant growth for the brand in New Zealand.
