Washington State Ranked Fifth Most Innovative in the U.S. For 2026

Olympia, WA – Washington state has secured the fifth spot in WalletHub’s 2026 ranking of the most innovative states in the United States. The personal finance company’s report, released on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, highlights Washington’s strengths in STEM professions, research and development, and its ability to foster a thriving innovation ecosystem.

National Innovation Leaders

The District of Columbia topped the list, followed by Massachusetts, California, and Colorado. At the lower complete of the rankings, Iowa ranked 47th, North Dakota 48th, and West Virginia 49th, with Louisiana and Mississippi rounding out the bottom two.

Washington’s Key Strengths

Washington state particularly excelled in several key areas contributing to its high ranking. It achieved second place nationally in the share of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) professionals and the share of science and engineering graduates aged 25 and older, trailing only Washington, D.C. In both categories. WalletHub noted that Massachusetts, Maryland, and Virginia followed Washington in the share of STEM professionals.

Washington tied for first place with California, New Mexico, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C., in research-and-development spending per capita. This demonstrates a significant investment in fostering innovation within the state.

WalletHub’s Methodology

WalletHub’s ranking was based on 25 “innovation-friendliness metrics,” including research-and-development spending per capita, the share of workers in STEM fields, and the concentration of technology companies. MSN reports that the study analyzed states across two main dimensions: innovation environment and human capital.

The innovation environment dimension considered factors like the share of technology companies, entrepreneurial activity, and net migration. Washington ranked fourth in this category. Human capital assessed the share of STEM professionals, Advanced Placement exam participation, and projected STEM job demand, where Washington placed sixth.

The Importance of STEM and Investment

Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, emphasized the connection between innovation-friendly states and attracting STEM professionals. He stated that these states offer ample career opportunities and investment funding for both startups and established companies. Maritime Technology Review highlights Lupo’s point that these states also equip students with the skills needed for success in the modern workforce, regardless of their chosen career path.

The success of Washington’s innovation ecosystem is driven by companies like Microsoft and Amazon, alongside a growing network of cleantech and aerospace firms, which translate STEM degrees into high-impact careers and further investment.

U.S. Innovation on the Global Stage

The United States as a whole maintains a strong position on the global stage, ranking third in the Global Innovation Index, behind Switzerland, and Sweden.
