Wanying Zhang Arrested at LAX and Detained Without Bail

Wanying Zhang, a 34-year-old real estate agent from Irvine, California, was arrested by FBI agents at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday while attempting to board a flight to Shanghai. Federal prosecutors allege that Zhang worked with handlers from the People’s Republic of China to surveil Ting-Yu Lai, an engineer in his 30s based in the U.S. who is the son of Taiwan President Ching-te Lai. Magistrate Judge Steve Kim ruled Zhang a flight risk and ordered her detained without bail.

Cryptocurrency Accounts and Family Ties in Court

At Wednesday’s court hearing in Los Angeles, federal prosecutors presented new financial and familial details regarding the case. Prosecutors alleged that Zhang had access to $190,000 in a secret Chinese cryptocurrency account from which she was still receiving profits. Prosecutors also pointed to Zhang’s brother having ties to the Chinese government and played a seized iCloud video that they argued demonstrated she posed a danger to society.

Appearing alongside her new attorney, Craig Harbaugh, Zhang wore a white jumpsuit and shackles. Harbaugh requested home confinement for his client and defended her purchasing history after prosecutors highlighted a dozen one-way trips Zhang allegedly took to China, Paris, and Japan, arguing that one-way tickets were simply more economical. Addressing the seized iCloud video during the proceedings, Judge Steve Kim remarked, You should have produced this video and I could say she’s an unfit mother, as it was established in court that Zhang has young children. Zhang is scheduled to appear in court again on October 19.

Zhang Allegedly Monitored Ting-Yu Lai in Seattle

Federal authorities state that Zhang’s alleged espionage activities included traveling to Seattle in September 2025 to monitor Ting-Yu Lai. According to Department of Justice surveillance photographs, Zhang was captured sitting in a car with an accomplice taking pictures of Lai’s house and close relatives. Before her arrest, Zhang maintained a public profile documenting travels to Paris and outings across the West Coast, and she previously attended the University of Southern California.

Zhang’s initial court appearance on Monday involved a procedural delay when her former public defender, Chad Pennington, requested a 20-minute side conversation and recess with the judge immediately after proceedings began. When the court resumed, Zhang confirmed that she understood the accusations against her.

Broader California Investigations Into Covert Influence
