Waratahs Suffer Heavy Defeat to Hurricanes, Suaalii Faces Potential Six-Week Sideline

The Waratahs endured a challenging night at Allianz Stadium, falling to a 40-point defeat against the Hurricanes 41-12 on Friday night. The loss was compounded by a hamstring injury to star centre Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, which could retain him sidelined for up to six weeks.

Hurricanes Dominate in Sydney

The Hurricanes scored nine tries to the Waratahs’ three, securing a dominant victory. According to Waratahs coach Dan McKellar, the team experienced a “nice little reality check” following their previously undefeated start to the season. The Hurricanes’ 40-point win narrowly missed being a record margin, as they previously defeated the Waratahs by 42 points in Wellington last year.

Suaalii Injury Adds to Woes

The evening took a turn for the worse when Suaalii sustained a hamstring injury during the warm-up, forcing him to miss the match. McKellar indicated the injury is significant, stating, “It caps off a disappointing evening…I’d suggest it’s probably longer than a couple of weeks.”

Turnovers and Poor Kicking Costly for Waratahs

McKellar pinpointed turnovers and ineffective kicking as key factors in the Waratahs’ downfall. The team conceded 18 turnovers and missed 28 of 128 tackles, allowing the Hurricanes to capitalize with 12 clean breaks. “I can tell you where it unravelled, it was our turnovers,” McKellar said. “First of all we turned over the ball way too much…and we didn’t kick well, our kicking hurt us.”

Hooper Calls for Suaalii to Play in Back Three

Debate continues regarding Suaalii’s best position, with former Waratahs and Wallabies captain Michael Hooper suggesting he would be more effective in the back three. Hooper stated, “I think he should be on the wing or fullback…I don’t think we’re seeing the value that he has to offer.” However, McKellar defended his decision to keep Suaalii at outside centre, noting he faced criticism last season for playing him at fullback.

Harvey Shines on Debut

Despite the overall disappointing result, young fullback Sid Harvey provided a bright spot for the Waratahs, making his Super Rugby debut off the bench. McKellar praised Harvey’s performance, stating, “He’s a very, very good young footballer…He was probably one of the shining lights, to be honest.”

Looking Ahead

Waratahs captain Mat Philip emphasized the need for improvement, stating the team’s performance did not reflect the standards of the 2026 Waratahs. The team will review the game and focus on demonstrating their commitment to the jersey in their next outing.
