Washington Commanders Take Financial Hit in London NFL Showdown

This international fixture alters the standard financial structure for the franchise, replacing local ticket sales and stadium revenue with a centralized league-funded package that covers player travel and equipment accommodations.

Financial Realities of International NFL Games

While standard NFL home games allow teams to retain approximately 66% of ticket sales revenue alongside lucrative local streams from concessions, parking, premium seating, and on-site merchandise, the league’s international series operates differently. The NFL discontinued its previous gate-loss stipends for home teams in 2022, shifting instead to covering travel and lodging expenses. Commanders owner Josh Harris addressed the economic trade-off at a fan event in London, stating that the financial return is unfavorable.

“It’s not good,” laughed Commanders owner Josh Harris when asked at the London pub where the team was hosting fans on Saturday. “It’s bad in a lot of ways. But I’m not so much focused on economics, honestly. I’m focused on being part of the NFL community and growing the game internationally.”

Team president Mark Clouse framed the financial sacrifice as a long-term strategic play rather than a profitable endeavor. Clouse noted that the franchise views the overseas trip as an investment in the future expansion of both the team and the league. That’s the way we have to look at it, Clouse said.

Record International Slate Signals League’s Ambitions

These overseas matchups allow the league to secure an early morning domestic broadcast window—such as the 9:30 AM ET kickoff for the Commanders-Colts game—which captures additional weekly television inventory and strengthens media rights negotiations.

For the franchises involved, international games provide commercial exposure and merchandise opportunities despite the missing home gate receipts. The Commanders sold out much of the merchandise brought to their London fan headquarters, demonstrating strong overseas demand. With each overseas game we play, we see more and more of our fans excited about travelling, Clouse added. The Jacksonville Jaguars remain the sole exception to the league’s rotation policy, maintaining a unique agreement to play two home games in London each season.

No Choice, But a Welcome One

While acknowledging that clubs lack any real say regarding overseas trips, Harris nonetheless considers the selection an honor. You really don’t have a choice, Harris stated. The NFL literally just says to you, You’re a good team, everyone wants to watch you, you’re an exciting team, you’re going to London. Since skipping it isn’t an option, the goal becomes delivering a fantastic experience for players, the local community, and supporters alike.
